Rat Cutlery RC-3 knife: Small Tactical

Once past that pleasant distraction of RC's model, Nutnfancy reviews the good Rat Cutlery RC-3 knife in this video. This little RC-3 would function nicely as a fixed blade EDC option or small tactical role. Produced for five years under license with the Ontario Knife Company, the RC-3 is indeed a measurable improvement over the Ontario RAT-3. The RC-3 sports a more comfortable and better textured micarta handle. This handle also is thankfully longer for better gripping options and has an exposed tang that terminates in a useful triangular pommel a useful feature for impacts. Its 3.4 inch 1095 blade does not break new ground vs the RAT-3 version but it remains an ideally shaped and versatile blade shape. The RC-3 does have a slightly thinner blade (thickness) which is advantageous for utility and tactical roles. Fit and finish is excellent and just a bit better than the RAT-3, which still remains an excellent choice for the same POU. The RC MOLLE sheath is versatile and includes many more secure mounting options than more simple but still serviceable RAT 3 sheath (reference the RC website for great pictures on this). The price on the RC-3 might be bit higher than the previous version however you will get more for your money and it remains reasonable. A couple of downsides: the edge comes to you dull and the relief grind will need backing off to realize razor sharpness. (just like the re-profiled RAT-3 shown) and the Velcro retention strap on the MOLLE sheath would be more ...

Gerber Combat Folder: Something Wicked This Way Comes

With a menacing 4.5" dagger blade and comfortably large, impact-capable handle, the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder is a mean blade. Few folding tactical blades match its reach and penetration capabilities at this weight and price range. Downsides would be the goofy mystery steel (425 M) that Gerber forces upon us and the pivot-mounted, non-switchable pocket clip. But the rest is outstanding: fast deployment, solid lockup, strong and fold proof Interlock locking system, blackened SS clip that's stout and contoured to handle, and a useful sheath. While a dedicated thrust cutter (dagger) design, the Gerber Combat Folder could also serve in some limited utility tasks as well. But it's main function is to provide you with a deadly backup weapon. And, like mine, it can be made even more effective in this calling by some expert sharpening of the upper edge which is fully protected within the handle. This is another highly recommended folding knife for deploying, combat-engaged Allied troops. Despite the funky steel, I give the Combat Folder a 9 of 10 on my likability rating.

Knife review: Brisa Enzo Birk 75: your scandi folder

The Finnish company Brisa enjoys a good reputation with their fixed blades, for example I previously discussed their excellent Enzo Trapper. Now they branch out towards well-designed and keenly priced folders with the Enzo Birk 75 series (75 being the blade length in mm). Here we have a closer look at a version of the folder with a scandi grind S30V blade and carbon fiber handle scales.

Benchmade 3300 Infidel: Overpriced Coolness

Why are out the front (OTF) autos so expensive? Nutnfancy says their inner workings though more complex simply don't justify the price of most models...there's just no way. They are just price gouging us for the perceived coolness and exclusivity. Just like the Microtech OTFs, the cool but hyper-expensive Benchmade Infidel will set you back about four plus cool ones in 2008. For that indeed you get a well-engineered double-action OTF knife: two compression springs work in tandem to provide extreme reliability (patented), SS liners increase design strength, locking mechanism has 4 heat-treated latches to ensure strength, multiple locking latches increase strength, has Presidio-style directional handle milling, a high traction actuation button, nice deep and strong clip, sharp, the laser-cut 4" D2 dagger blade is ground well, and a blowout hole is provided for cleaning purposes (helps de-lint the mechanism). All this engineering results in a fast, reliable OTF auto that I believe would be on par with the Halo from Microtech. But it remains impractical: it's a heavier 5.0 oz, it's an inherently a weaker design than a heavy duty tactical folder (which is almost as fast too), the thick handle is necessary to encase mechanism, it's complexity can lead to failure no matter how quality made it is, it has a very limited purpose and short dagger blade, and it's a very low value knife. So many better tactical knife options exist for hundreds less than the Infidel. So on terms of ...
